Trump's immigration plan is meant to destroy jobs and lift costs

Economists warn that Trump's mass deportation plan will destroy American jobs and drive up prices.

The New York Times reported:

There are logistical, legal, diplomatic and – although Mr Trump has said there is “no price” he would not impose on the government – financial obstacles to expelling millions of people who would rather stay. (According to the American Immigration Council, an immigrant advocacy group, it would cost $315 billion to arrest, detain and deport all 13.3 million people living in the United States illegally or with revocable temporary status .)

An exact forecast of the effects is therefore not possible at this point in time. But if Mr. Trump

While he doesn't come close to achieving what he promised, many economists expect higher prices for goods and services and possibly lower employment rates for American workers.

“This gigantic shock will cost trillions of dollars in economic growth and eliminate hundreds of thousands of American jobs,” said Michael Clemens, an economics professor at George Mason University who focuses on migration. “It will quickly drive up inflation because it reduces the ability of U.S. firms to deliver goods and services faster than it reduces demand.”

When trying to calculate the impact of Trump's immigration policies, one must look to recent history.

The last time Trump restricted immigration, it led to labor shortages in agriculture and meat processing, to name just two sectors, which resulted in higher prices for American consumers. The number of immigrants who have committed crimes is very small compared to Trump's deportation promises, but it is clear to economists that removing millions of immigrants from the U.S. economy will have drastic consequences.

Many voters voted for Trump expecting he would lower prices. Instead, the Trump agenda looks like a recession's best friend.

Trump appears willing to cut jobs and raise prices because he believes immigrants will have to leave the country.

Buckle up, America, because things are about to get bumpy.
