Prime Trump volunteer resigns after warning New Hampshire is ‘not a swing state’
A senior Trump volunteer in Massachusetts has resigned from his post after sending an email Sunday night warning that “the campaign has concluded that New Hampshire is no longer a swing state” and urging his supporters to focus their efforts on Pennsylvania instead.
Tom Mountain, one of several Trump co-chairs in Massachusetts, wrote that “the campaign has determined that New Hampshire is no longer a swing state” and advised his supporters to turn their attention to Pennsylvania instead, the Boston Globe reported in an exclusive report.
“The Democrats' reshuffle from Biden to Harris caused our campaign to shift its strategy to other winnable swing states,” Mountain wrote in an email to Trump volunteers in the state. “For those who campaigned in New Hampshire in 2016 and 2020 and expected to do the same after Labor Day, the simple question is: what should we do?” Mountain wrote. “GO TO PENNSYLVANIA. The next swing state. This is the state we need to win. If we lose Pennsylvania, we lose the election.”
Mountain wrote in the email: “Trump
would “certainly lose even more significantly” in New Hampshire than in 2016 and 2020, citing “campaign data/research.” He claimed the funds would be cut off and the campaign would not send Trump or prominent surrogates such as his sons. The email was leaked to the Globe and confirmed by multiple recipients.”
538 has New Hampshire +7 for Kamala Harris on September 2nd.

Although Mountain was Trump's running mate in Massachusetts, a senior Trump campaign adviser said after his email that he would “no longer be involved with the campaign.”
The Trump team tried to allay Mountain's concerns by saying that his email was not true and that he was merely a volunteer and therefore had no insight into his campaign's data and strategies.
They say they will maintain a local presence in the Granite State, although the Globe noted that the RNC would not answer questions about plans for campaign events in New Hampshire or what resources it is sending there, if any, and noted that Kamala Harris is expected to visit the state this week, Trump has not been there since January, “and it has been months since the state last had a high-level visit from a deputy, such as North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum in April.
A July 31 Emerson College Polling/WHDH poll of New Hampshire voters found, “50% of voters support Vice President Kamala Harris and 46% support former President Donald Trump. Four percent of voters are undecided. When undecided voters are asked which candidate they lean toward, overall support for Harris rises to 52% and for Trump to 48%. Among third-party candidates on the ballot, Harris leads Trump, 48% to 41%; 6% support Robert Kennedy Jr., 1% supports Jill Stein.”
These numbers put Mountain's email in context and lend it some credibility. We'll see if the Trump campaign sends high-profile surrogates and if the RNC provides funding to the state.
