Mike Johnson can only afford two defeats in Friday's House Speaker election, and he has already lost one. Rep. Thomas Massie said he would not support Johnson as speaker. Trying to convey his confidence while exuding desperation, Speaker Johnson continued talking on “Fox and Friends.”
After Johnson spoke about the terrorist attack in New Orleans, he was asked, “Mr. Speaker, let me switch gears a little bit.” You have the vote for you as speaker tomorrow. What can you tell us? How much confidence do you have that you will have the votes necessary to keep the gavel?”
Speaker Johnson responded:
We will manage this. Look, I'm humbled and honored to have President Trump's support for the role, because I'll be talking about the role again, as well as the support of leaders across the conservative spectrum and the Republican Party.
All my colleagues are with us and we will get through this. Look, the things we're talking about this morning are an example of the fact that we live in very serious times. We, we can't afford any palace drama here. We must begin the Congress, which begins tomorrow, and we must get to work immediately.

Trump has given Johnson his full support, so it would be completely embarrassing if Johnson didn't run for re-election.
The Democrats have promised that there will be no Democratic votes to elect Johnson. Every single Democrat will vote for Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
For years, the mainstream media has promoted the Trump-supported narrative that the president-elect controls Republicans in the House of Representatives, but as the implosion of the government funding bill showed, Trump's influence appears to be waning.
If Mike Johnson had to go through multiple rounds of voting to get re-elected as speaker, it would be a defeat for Trump.
A defeat for Johnson would be further evidence of the waning influence of Trump, who will take office as a lame-duck president.
Mike Johnson is desperate because if the speaker election drags on, the certification of the 2024 election will be delayed.
Republicans have already had a bad start before they can take power.
