Democratic MP Gerry Connolly from Virginia died at the age of 75 after a fight against esophageal cancer, his family said on Wednesday.
“We share with great sadness that our committed and loving father, husband, brother, friend and civil servant, congress member Gerald E. Connolly, died peacefully this morning in his house,” says a explanation that was published on Connolly X account.
Until the end of the last month, Connolly was the top democrat in the house committee for supervision and government reform when he said he would step down because his cancer had returned.
Connolly had been elected in this leadership in December because the progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y., was even after announcing his diagnosis a month earlier.
Connolly was elected to the congress for the first time in 2008 and was known in the house for his violent advocacy in the name of the thousands of federal employees who live in his district of Northern Virginia.
Connolly, a sociable person, cultivated friendships on both sides of the aisle over more than 15 years in the congress.
On Wednesday morning, the House Rules Committee held its controversial meeting over President Donald Trump's massive tax laws and kept a moment of silence in Connolly's honor.
“To stop and speak for a prayer for his family, please take some time,” said the chairman of the Committee Virginia Foxx, marginal no., to the members.
Connolly revealed in November that he had been diagnosed with neck cancer – a surprise, he said because he had almost no symptoms.
He said he would immediately undergo chemotherapy and immunotherapy and swore to combat the disease, “I know how – with Irish struggle and humor”.

Senator Mark Warner, D-VA., Said that he was “broken heart” about Connolly's loss.
“Gerry was a fighter. His sharp spirit, his limitless energy and his deep commitment to the people in North -Virginia made him a force with which he had to reckon with the Fairfax supervisory authority or in the congress,” said Warner in a statement.
“He met every challenge with persistence and intentions, including his last struggle against cancer, which he had confronted with courage, grace and calm dignity,” said the senator.
“Gerry lived his life to return something to others and make our community better,” was his family's statement.
“He was looking for the disadvantaged and unvoiceless. He always came up with what is right and just. He was an experienced statesman on the international stage, an experienced legislator in the congress, a visionary executive of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, a violent defender of democracy, an environmental champion and a mentor for so many.”
