It turns out that many Americans don't have much confidence in Trump to do a good job on the economy.
The AP reported on their survey:
But as Trump takes office, the poll shows that many Americans don't expect him to be able to cut costs immediately. This includes some of his own supporters. Less than half of Republicans are at least “very” confident that Trump will make progress in reducing food, housing or health care costs, although about 6 in 10 are at least “very” confident that he can create jobs.
Confidence in Trump's ability to handle the general economic situation is also quite low. Only about a third of Americans are “extremely” or “very” confident about his ability to handle the economy and jobs. Nearly 2 in 10 are “moderately” confident and about half are “slightly confident” or “not at all confident.”
It's as if many Americans remember the last time Trump was in office and expect him to screw it up.
The poll provides a very different perspective than what Republicans and the media would have us believe. The idea that Trump had somehow become popular and had a mandate was a Republican construct propagated by the media.
Six in 10 voters who said the economy was their most important issue voted for Trump. So what happened? Did they all suddenly wake up and realize who they were voting for, or did they vote against Biden, or was the economy an excuse not to vote for a black woman?
Only the people who cast those ballots know the honest answer, but Republicans and Trump are on a different planet if they believe the country will get behind them and support their agenda, and things could get ugly quickly.
