Canada's new prime minister, shortly after he was sworn in to the office on Friday, President Donald Trump quickly turned the idea that the northern neighbor of the United States would become his 51st state.
“I was clear. The ministers behind me, I think, were clear to a person when asked,” Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters in Ottawa.
“We will never be part of the United States in any way,” said Carney.
“America is not Canada,” said the prime minister, the member of the liberal party and former head of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England.
Carney also answered a question about the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who said on Friday that Canada would be better off as a US state.
“It's crazy,” said Carney. “It's crazy. It's very simple. It's all you can say.”
But Carney also said he was looking forward to talking to Trump, adding: “We respect the United States. We respect President Trump.”
After weeks of Trump's suggestions, Carney's comments came that Canada – a top allied and trading partner – would be included in the United States and how the president imposed hard tariffs from the neighboring country.

“The US President has thought that we annexed us again,” the Greenland Prime Minister Mute Eggede wrote in a Facebook contribution when he asked for a meeting of the nation's political party leaders to address Trump's reasoning.
“Do not treat us with disrespect. There is enough enough,” wrote Eggede.

In comments on Reporter Friday, Carney said: “We are champions in our house. We are responsible. You know?”
“It's always nice when people say nice things about you, but we don't need it. We don't look for it,” he said.
“Take a look at the cabinet behind me. You would not have this cabinet in America,” said Carney. “You don't have this cabinet in America. We are a very fundamental country.”
The prime minister said “Nature of Canada means that we will not agree with the United States
“The economy means that we shouldn't,” said Carney. “What you will see from this government focuses on building here at home, building with various partners abroad. And that will increase the point.”
“It is good-we do it for our own reasons to be clear. For our own people, for the highly paid jobs,” said Carney. “But at some point the truth will go out and the Americans will understand too.”
Since Trump repeated the White House for his second term, which has not been populated, he has repeatedly talked about taking over Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal.
At the beginning of February, he said the United States “take over the Gaza Strip” and “We will own it”.
Israel and the militant group Hamas have had terrorist attacks from Hamas on Israel in war since October 7, 2023.
