Tesla The company began offering discounts on new Cybertruck vehicles in its inventory this week, according to listings on the company's website.
The discounts are up to $1,600 on new Cybertrucks, with the reduced price depending on configuration, and up to about $2,600 on demo versions of the trucks in stock, listings show. Production of the boxy, unpainted steel pickup trucks has reportedly declined in recent weeks at Tesla's factory in Austin, Texas.
Deliveries of the unconventional pickup to customers began in 2023. CEO Elon Musk originally introduced the Cybertruck in 2019 and said it would cost around $40,000, but its base price in the US was closer to that later in 2024 $80,000.
Wall Street previously viewed the Cybertruck as a key growth driver for Tesla's core automotive sales.
While the Cybertruck sold the ford The Lightning F-150 became the fifth best-selling electric vehicle domestically in the U.S. last year, according to data from Cox Automotive. Its high price, repeated recalls and production problems in Austin hindered growth. In November, Tesla initiated its sixth recall in a year to replace defective drive inverters.
As CNBC previously reported, Tesla's deliveries fell slightly year-over-year in 2024, even as global demand for electric vehicles hit a record high. A number of new competitive models from a variety of car manufacturers reduced Tesla's market share.
According to Cox data, full-year 2024 electric vehicle sales in the U.S. reached an estimated 1.3 million, up 7.3% from the previous year. However, Tesla's sales fell by about 37,000 vehicles over the year.
The Tesla Model Y SUV and Model 3 sedan were by far the two best-selling electric vehicles. But sales figures for both older, cheaper Tesla models fell compared to the previous year. Cox estimated that Tesla sold about 38,965 Cybertrucks in the U.S. last year.
In recent days, Musk apologized to customers in California for delays in the delivery of their Cybertrucks. He said the trucks will now be used to deliver supplies and wireless internet to people in Los Angeles affected by the devastating wildfires.
“Please apologize to those expecting Cybertruck deliveries in California in the next few days,” Musk wrote on a note to be delivered by the end of the week.”
