The Republicans are having a lot of trouble pushing through their tax cuts for the rich. So far, Republicans in the House and Senate can't agree on anything, and any talk of a quick start for the Trump administration is going down in flames.
Semafor reported:
House and Senate Republicans are still haggling over the scope and scope of their plan, with a long list of details yet to be worked out and decisions yet to be made. And the more the two chambers argue over how quickly to move, the less time they spend on the even more difficult policy decisions.
House Speaker Mike Johnson has suggested the party's entire tax plan could be passed by April. But many other Republicans expect it will be months before Trump gets a final bill on the table – possibly by the end of the year – to prevent his first-term tax cuts from expiring.
Many of these Republicans are also taking their time on taxes, arguing that they have a unique opportunity to redirect U.S. economic policy and that there is no point in rushing it.
Republicans are likely to pass the tax cuts before the end of the year, but to say they are divided on all issues might be an understatement. Republicans don't even agree on the most basic point: whether to pay for the tax cuts.
Just last month, Mike Johnson struck a deal with Trump to cut trillions of dollars in mandatory spending in areas like veterans' benefits and health care.
Because these cuts are not popular with the American people, some Republicans in the House and Senate argue that there is no need to pay for tax cuts for the rich. Trump and the Republicans can add $4.2 trillion more debt to the country and everything will be fine.
Instead of taking the lead, Trump's big piece of advice is to tell Republicans to work it out among themselves while he goes to the golf course.
The Republicans are so dysfunctional they can't even stand Tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations with unanimous consent.
Trump's presidency could turn into an epic disaster as the weak president-elect is carried out to sea by the currents of Republican dysfunction.
