Hundreds have reportedly canceled their subscriptions after Bezos blocked assist for Kamala Harris
Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos reportedly blocked the paper's plan to endorse Kamala Harris, and thousands of readers have canceled their subscriptions.
Semafor reported:
A person familiar with the numbers told Semafor that the decision appears to have already impacted subscriptions. In the 24 hours ending Friday afternoon, about 2,000 subscribers canceled their subscriptions, an unusually high number, an employee said. Another email the Post sent to subscribers on Friday also sparked a flood of complaints from readers about the paper's lack of an endorsement.
Another person who saw the numbers downplayed them, saying Friday's cancellation rate was “statistically significant.”
The New York Times reported that The Washington Post added just 4,000 subscribers this year. If that's true and the number of subscription cancellations is correct, the postal service lost half of its annual growth in one day.
The rest of the newspaper's staff is not happy with the non-support decision, with the exception of the Murdoch-trained right-wingers Bezos has put in charge of running his newspaper.
Make no mistake. Jeff Bezos made it clear to the world that The Washington Post is not a press institution that has a responsibility to the nation. The Washington Post belongs to Jeff Bezos and he will do whatever he wants with it, even if all credibility is lost and he drives the newspaper into ruin.
