Delta Air LinesThe Chief Operating Officer will take up his post at the end of the month, the company announced in a securities announcement on Friday.

CEO Ed Bastian said in an employee memo that Chief Operating Officer Mike Spanos is taking a job at another company.

His departure after just over a year in office came just weeks after Delta was forced to resign in the wake of the massive CrowdStrike outage in July. Delta estimates that these disruptions cost the airline around $500 million and announced that it will seek compensation from CrowdStrike and Microsoft.

However, Bastian said in Friday's memo that Spanos told him earlier in the summer that he was “considering options outside of Delta.”

Delta has no plans to replace Spanos, Bastian said. Instead, John Laughter, chief operating officer and president of Delta's maintenance and overhaul unit TechOps, and Allison Ausband, chief customer experience officer, will report to Bastian.

Spanos joined Delta in May 2023 and was previously CEO of Six Flags Entertainment and management positions at PepsiCo.
