Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong tested positive for Covid-19 days after returning from official visits to South Africa and Kenya.
“I’m generally fine, but my doctors have advised me to self-isolate until I have no more symptoms,” Lee said in a Facebook post Monday. “Because of my age, they also prescribed me Paxlovid, which is an antiviral.”
Lee is 71 years old and has served as prime minister of the Southeast Asian city-state since 2004. According to the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he was in South Africa and Kenya from May 14 to 19.
Singapore passed its peak in Covid-19 infections in April.
Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said on May 9 that only about half of Singaporeans aged 60 and over are up to date on their Covid-19 vaccinations, down from 58% at the start of 2023.
