Shares of Costco On Thursday, despite the Warehouse Club, the quarterly profits and income, which exceeded estimates and reported the sales profits of 8% compared to the previous year.
In contrast to many retailers, Costco does not offer an annual outlook. Nevertheless, the company's executives spoke about a profit call about the challenges and higher costs that the tariffs have determined for his business
In the third quarter, the Warehouse Club dealer did in the third quarter compared to what Wall Street expected, based on a survey of LSEG analysts:
- Win each share: $ 4.28 expected compared to $ 4.24
- Revenue: 63.21 billion US dollars expected compared to $ 63.19 billion
The net income of Costco for the three-month period ended on May 11 rose to $ 1.90 billion or $ 4.28 per share compared to $ 1.68 billion or $ 3.78 in the previous year. Sales rose in the same period of 58.52 billion in the same period last year.
Comparable sales, an industry metric, which starts unique factors such as the openings and closings in Store, rose by 8% and e-commerce turnover rose by almost 16% compared to the same period last year, except gas and the effects of changes on foreign exchange.
Since the tariffs increase economic concerns and potentially consumer prices, Costco could benefit. An unpredictable tariff policy could help to lead more customers to the Warehouse Club, which is known for its competition prices and mass discounts, and encourage them to renew their membership. The clubs also sell discounted gas and food, which are more steel -rich traffic drivers, even if consumers withdraw expenses. And compared to some other retailers, Costco has a stronger hand in price negotiations with suppliers due to its size.
About a third of the US sales of Costco are goods from other countries, said CFO Gary Millerschip about the company's winning call. He said items imported from China make up about 8% of the total US turnover.
Some retailers have already warned that higher tariffs will mean higher prices. Best Buy CEO Corry said on Thursday that the retailer had already increased prices for some consumer electronics due to tariffs. Cosmetic company Elf Beauty Last week, announced a price increase for the make -up. And Walmart At the beginning of this month, CFO John David Rainey warned that higher prizes came into the shops and the discounter's website at the end of May or June.
In the company's profit layer, CEO Ron Vachris said that Costco was looking for ways to lower the tariffs and at the same time keep prices low. He said his buyers hurried orders to bring them to the United States before tariffs. It has redirected goods from countries with higher tariffs to non-US markets. And there is more articles for its private brand Kirkland signature in the countries or regions in which the articles are sold.
Even with tariffs, he said, Costco reduced the price of some items, including eggs, butter and olive oil. He said that it would also try to touch the reasons that customers could register or renew themselves for membership, e.g.
Compared to other retailers, Costco sells a slimmer selection of articles such as less different brands of peanut butter or diapers. Millerschip said that a limited approach means that Costco is a larger buyer and can work closer to the pricing with suppliers. He said Costco could also turn other articles if necessary.
In some cases, Costco has absorbed the cost differences in connection with tariffs, and in other cases it increased prices, said Millerschip. For example, the retailer has decided to keep the border over the price of pineapple and bananas from Central and South America because they are land for buyers, he said.
“We believed that it was important to really eliminate the effects on the member by working with our suppliers and finding the efficiency increases and accepting that there may be a margin impact,” he said.
On the other hand, it decided to increase the price of flowers from Central and South America, as these are a more discretionary article.
In the end on Thursday, the Costco shares rose by about 10% this year. This has exceeded the S&P 500 gains over 1% in the same period.
