Agent Scott Boras says it's not nearly cash
Major League Baseball super agent Scott Boras just negotiated the biggest contract of his life.
On Thursday, the New York Mets signed four-time All-Star Juan Soto to a record, 15-year, $765 million contract. It is the largest deal in the history of professional sports.
Soto will become the first player in MLB to earn more than $50 million in a single season.
“Half the league wanted to be a part of it,” Boras told CNBC’s “Power Lunch.” “So many teams were looking for this rare asset because in the end it was just a good deal to acquire him.”
Boras spoke about the difficult decision Soto and his team had to find the best solution. One factor in his decision was his recent performance at Citi Field, where the Mets play.
“Juan Soto’s level of performance at Citi Field is well known to him,” Boras said. “He is playing at the highest level and the players are thinking about execution. You think about all of these factors.”
In Soto's 35 games at Citi Field, the left-hander hit 12 home runs, 26 RBIs and had a .466 on-base percentage and .709 slugging.
His longest home run of his career, 466 feet, occurred on August 12, 2020 at Citi Field.
Boras also shared that it's not just about the money for the 26-year-old player.
“When you're an athlete, you think about everything, but most of all you think about your routine, your performance,” Boras said. “There are far more things than the economy.”
At his opening press conference, Soto said the Mets treated him like family.
“They showed me a lot of love, what they have and how they will try to make it comfortable. That's one of the things that impressed me more, and how they will treat everyone around my family,” Soto said.
