The first US Covid-19 cases of a new, highly contagious strain of the virus, first found in South Africa, were discovered in South Carolina, the state’s Department of Health reported Thursday.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control said the strain known as B.1.351 was found in two people.

“South Carolina public health officials were informed yesterday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about a sample from South Carolina that was tested at LabCorp and classified as variant B.1.351 originally identified in South Africa. Also DHECs Public The Health Laboratory tested samples on Jan. 25 and identified a separate case of the same variant yesterday, “the Department of Health and Environmental Control of South Carolina said in a statement.
