The Republican assault on “Chuck Schumer Bridge” on the stimulus collapses in a comical approach

Republicans claim the stimulus package includes a provision to build the Chuck Schumer Bridge, but the funding request was made in 2020 by Mitch McConnell’s wife.

For example, here is Tucker Carlson’s Daily Caller pushing the lie:

The Biden Aid Package includes money for the New York Seaway International Bridge, a priority for Chuck Schumer https://t.co/7etDiaMC6m

– Daily caller (@DailyCaller) February 22, 2021

John Bresnahan of Punchbowl News tweeted the real story of “Chuck Schumer Bridge”:

/ 2 A document received from @punchbowlnews shows that the funding request was actually made in spring 2020. The Seaway International Bridge over the St. Lawrence River is one of the busiest crossing points between the two countries.

– John Bresnahan (@bresreports) February 24, 2021

/ 4 Seaway International Bridge Corp., the agency that operates the bridge, returned to the Canadian and American governments for more money. From there, according to the document, the $ 1.5 million request came.

– John Bresnahan (@bresreports) February 24, 2021

/ 5 The Senate Republicans beat up Schumer over a funding request that came from the DOT under Elaine Chao, who is of course married to @leadermcconnell.

– John Bresnahan (@bresreports) February 24, 2021

In conclusion, Mitch McConnell’s wife, as Trump’s transportation secretary, applied for funding for the bridge in 2020. The bridge is one of the busiest trading posts in North America. There is no Chuck Schumer Bridge. Schumer never applied for funding. Republicans beat up Schumer over a funding request from Mitch McConnell’s wife while she was working in the Trump administration.

Republicans are desperate to label the stimulus plan corrupt as a justification for votes against helping the American people during a pandemic.

With the Democrats doing nothing wrong, the Republicans decided to direct their own funding requests to Schumer and give him a menacing name.

The incentive is overwhelmingly popular, and no matter what falsehoods Republicans come up with, they are on the wrong side of an issue that will almost certainly come back to haunt them.
