The road to the 2021 Oscar awards was strange. After permanent date changes and delays, as well as virtual film festivals and new entry requirements, the Oscars will take place this Sunday.

On the way to the ceremony there are some clear front runners in major categories like best picture and best director, but the race is still wide open in others like best actress.

Regardless of who wins, the Oscar nomination for 2021 is a historic one. It is the first time that an all-black production team has been nominated for Best Picture (“Judas and the Black Messiah”), the first time that two actors of Asian descent have been nominated for Best Actor (Steven Yeun and Riz Ahmed) and the first year two women were nominated for Best Director (Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell).

Zhao’s “Nomadland” has gotten through the awards season and appears poised to get the best picture as well as the best directing award for the filmmaker, provided no unforeseen issues arise.

Chadwick Boseman, who passed away unexpectedly after a four-year battle with colon cancer hid from the public, is likely to receive the Best Actor Award for his performance in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”

Daniel Kaluuya is expected to win the Best Supporting Actor Trophy for his appearance in Judas and the Black Messiah, while Yuh-Jung Youn appears to be on track to become the second Asian woman to appear at the ceremony wins an acting award.

The price for the best actress, on the other hand, is everyone’s guess.

More than two dozen awards will be presented this Sunday. Here you can see who can take home the prize in the top categories.

best picture

On the way to the ceremony on Sunday, “Nomadland” seems to be the clear leader for the price for the best picture. The film received top honors from the Producers Guild of America, Directors Guild of America, Golden Globes, and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Nevertheless, “1917” and “La La Land” had similar successes, but lost to “Parasite” and “Moonlight” respectively. So there’s still a chance one of the other competitors could get upset.

“Nomadland” is nominated alongside “The Father”, “Judas and the Black Messiah”, “Mank”, “Minari”, “Promising Young Woman”, “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7”.

Best director

In the weeks leading up to the Oscars, Zhao won the Critics Choice, Golden Globes, and Directors Guild of America awards for “Nomadland” for top director. While facing a competition in this category at the Academy Awards, she is expected to be the second woman to ever win the award for best director.

She was nominated alongside Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”), David Fincher (“Mank”), Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari”) and Thomas Vinterberg (“Another Round”).

Best animated feature

“Soul” and “Wolfwalkers” both bid goodbye to the Annie Awards for Best Picture Winning, one for Best Feature and one for Best Indie Feature, but only one can win the Grand Prix for Animation at the Oscars.

Pixar’s “Soul” appears to be the strong front runner, earning Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter his ninth Oscar nomination and a potential third win. “Soul” is his fourth nomination for Best Animated Feature, a record for the category first given in 2002.

Other nominated titles include another Pixar feature called “Onward” as well as Netflix’s “Over the Moon” and “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon”.

Best actor

Anthony Hopkins may have won BAFTA for Best Actor for “The Father,” but it appears the late Chadwick Boseman will take home the award this Sunday.

The actor – best known for his role as T’Challa, the Black Panther, in Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe – passed away in August last year at the age of 43. Posthumously, he took home the Best Actor Awards at Critics Choice, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild Awards that year.

Other nominees are Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”), Gary Oldman (“Mank”) and Steven Yeun (“Minari”).

Best Actress

One can imagine which actress will take home the award for best acting on Sunday. Another actress won the award at the top awards shows leading up to the Oscars.

Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”) won the Critics Choice Awards, Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) took home BAFTA, Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Butt”) won the Screen Actors Guild Award and Andra Day ( “The USA vs. Billie Holiday”) won the Golden Globe.

Only Vanessa Kirby has yet to claim a win for her performance in “Pieces of a Woman”, but she is not completely out of the running.

Best original script

Aaron Sorkin may have won the Best Original Screenplay for “The Trial of the Chicago 7” at the Golden Globes, but it was Emerald Fennell for “Promising Young Woman” who won the rest of the awards on the circuit.

Fennell received the BAFTA, Critics Choice, and Writers Guild of America awards in advance of the ceremony on Sunday. If she wins the trophy at the Academy Awards, she will be the second female solo winner in that category. Diablo Cody was the first for “Juno”.

Carey Mulligan plays in Promising Young Woman.
