The tide seems to be turning a bit this week. With COVID growing mainly in the red states, it seems that suddenly Republicans are ready to endorse vaccines. Fox presenters Steve Doocy and Sean Hannity encouraged their viewers to watch the recording. And longtime holdout and number 2 Republican in the House of Representatives, Steve Scalise, got his jab.
Conservatives, however, still seem focused on waging a culture war over masks. Ron DeSantis says, despite a massive spike in COVID in Florida, he won’t be issuing a mask mandate for schools this fall. And Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of the former president, said she was thrilled the other day when her maskless daughter came home sick from school.
Trump told the hosts at Fox & Friends: “I think the idea that we leave our children masked in school all day long is absolutely ridiculous. “
Eric Trump’s wife continued: “My daughter Carolina caught a cold last week. All parents know this is a nightmare. I have to tell you, I was so excited because I know that she actually comes into contact with viruses and germs and bacteria that enable her to develop an immune system. “
Trump closed, “This is absolutely insane. As a parent, I can tell you that I will not mask my children. It’s not going to happen.”
COVID-19, of course, isn’t chickenpox or a cold, it’s a fatal disease. And although children deal with the disease much better than adults, some still die or have serious side effects.
