Dapper Dan turns into the primary black designer to obtain the CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award
One of the most anticipated fashion industry awards shows is a personal return, and this year’s nominees and award winners were announced this week. The CFDA Awards are scheduled to take place on November 10th at THE POOL + THE GRILL and this year’s winners are none other than the legendary Dapper Dan.
Dapper Dan is honored with the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, and Vogue states that he will be the first designer without a fashion show to ever win the award. However, Dapper Dan made it clear that his designs were expanded beyond the catwalk.
He recognized the honor and said: “Isn’t it ironic, as the fashion world says, that Dapper Dan won the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award without ever doing a runway show? The streets of Harlem have been my catwalk for 35 years. Weren’t the big luxury brands inspired by this? ”
He continued, “Maybe logo mania is an illusion. Thank you Harlem, I love you! “
He also thanked CFDA for being the first black designer to win the award.
Dapper Dan is known for using the logo prints from brands like Gucci, Fendi and Louis Vuitton to create his own original designs. His work was and remains an integral part of hip-hop culture to this day.
Back in 2017, Dapper Dan worked with Gucci on his own line and the following year he worked with the brand to open a store in Harlem. As we previously reported, he was also part of the brand’s Changemakers Council, which came together to work on Gucci’s Changemakers Fund.
