DETROIT — Pickup trucks again topped America’s best-selling vehicles last year, but Tesla broke into the top 10 for the first time amid a Covid-era shake-up among other popular models.
Data and analytics firm Motor Intelligence reports that the Tesla Model Y electric crossover was the country’s sixth best-selling vehicle in 2022, surpassing the GMC Sierra pickup, Honda CR-V crossover and other long-time bestsellers.
Tesla does not report regional or individual vehicle sales, so data is estimated. In all, Tesla reported delivering approximately 1.25 million Model Y and Model 3 vehicles worldwide in 2022. The Model 3 ranked 13th in sales, according to Motor Intelligence, with 211,641 units.
“It’s no surprise that Tesla ranks so high,” said Michelle Krebs, executive analyst at Cox Automotive. “The brand still dominates the EV market and the luxury market despite all the news and stuff. A lot of that strength comes from the Model Y.”
Despite its lowest sales since 2012, the Ford F-Series was the country’s best-selling vehicle for 41 years and America’s best-selling truck for 46 consecutive years. The Chevrolet Silverado recaptured its longtime second spot after being surpassed by the Ram pickup in 2021.
Parts and supply chain issues since the start of the Covid pandemic have caused automakers to experience sporadic plant shutdowns at different times, causing a shake in vehicle sales rankings in recent years.
“We’ve seen so much volatility in sales and inventory levels,” Krebs said. “The year 2022 started with a very high demand … but then we saw things change by the end of the year. Demand seemed to be easing somewhat while stocks, not generally, were rising.”
Auto industry executives and analysts are cautiously optimistic that US manufacturing will continue to normalize this year amid recession fears, rising interest rates and other economic concerns. According to industry analysts, the industry sold an estimated between 13.7 million and 13.9 million vehicles last year. In a typical year before the pandemic, more than 17 million were sold.
Here are the top 10 best-selling vehicles in the US by unit sales for 2022, according to Motor Intelligence.
