Memories of UMass Amherst Span 58 Years

Joan Kennedy
Legacy family members Joan Kennedy ’53, Evelyn D. Kennedy ’26, and Nina Eppes ’80 share memories on the campus of UMass Amherst. The Alumni Association Legacy Family program recognizes families with graduates of different generations and helps to strengthen their shared experience and connection with UMass Amherst.
RECENTLY, THREE GENERATIONS OF THE Kennedy family returned to UMass Amherst to tour the campus and share memories of times spent here.

This legacy family’s UMass Amherst story begins with Evelyn D. Kennedy ’26, a graduate of the College of Natural Resources and the Environment. After achieving her bachelor’s degree in consumer studies, she worked for a number of years as a teacher and was active with the Girl Scouts of America. Daughter Joan Kennedy ’53 attended the same college at UMass Amherst but pursued her love of landscape architecture. Joan has worked in city planning and is currently a landscape designer of perennial borders. Last, but not least, granddaughter Nina Eppes ’80 transferred to the campus to complete her bachelor’s degree in English. Nina is currently a technical writer of software documentation and online help. (We were sorry to learn at press time that Evelyn D. Kennedy passed away in January)

All three women were impressed by the many changes to the campus, especially the Fine Arts Center and William D. Mullins Center. “Visiting the campus together was great experience,” said Nina. “It provided us with a sense of tradition and family history.”

If you are part of a legacy family, keep the history alive and share your story with the Alumni Association. Visit our Web site at UMassAlumni.com/legacy.htm, and fill out our brief questionnaire.
