Debby Sabin Kanzer ’86 and her Lovelane horses help special-needs kids. |

IF LIFE IS GOOD WHEN your passion becomes your job, then Debby Sabin Kanzer ’86, director of Lovelane, a special-needs horseback riding program, is living the good life.
Kanzer started Lovelane upon graduating from UMass Amherst. Success didn’t come easily at first; she began by borrowing people’s horses and stables in order to run the program. “We finally built our own home last September,” says Kanzer. “Now the program will outlive me. Lovelane has its own security and its own future, and the quality of the program is great.”
Lovelane, located in Lincoln, Mass., is a healing escape for children and teens with emotional and physical disabilities. The therapy uses the horse’s movement to facilitate a child’s specific physical therapy goals; riders are taken through complex movements that naturally move the body in a manner similar to human gait.
As a nonprofit with no governmental assistance, Lovelane is supported by volunteers, donations, and fees for therapy. Single lessons run $60-$98 each, and scholarships help offset the price for those who need a hand. Lovelane now boasts a waiting list due to the success and popularity of its program. Kanzer, however, hasn’t let it skew her priorities. “Kids are progressing, their lives are improving—that’s what’s most important.”
