IN OCTOBER, MICROSOFT CEO STEVE Ballmer crowned the campus as the first Microsoft IT Showcase School in the nation, in recognition of UMass Amherst’s innovative leadership in applying information technology to teaching and learning. Five specific projects are earmarked for investment: The Information Technology Program, in which students in any major can add a minor in information technology; IT Curriculum Case Studies, management courses that employ Microsoft ConferenceXP, which delivers videoconferencing and interactive Tablet PC applications; Learning Commons, the new 23,000-square-foot space in the W.E.B. Du Bois Library featuring 164 workstations, 400 ports for laptop access to the campus network and Internet, 16 tablet PCs, e-mail kiosks, and access to an array of software; Women in Technology Initiatives; and support for UMass Amherst’s Center for Teaching’s sponsorship of Microsoft’s Tablet PC Community of Practice, where faculty and staff share their knowledge about this technology.
