Rendering of UMass Amherst's North Residential Area, due to be completed in August 2006. |

FENCES AND HARDHATS DECORATE THE UMass Amherst campus as construction begins on four new five-story buildings that will become the highly anticipated North Residential Area, and the first residence halls to be built since 1971.
At the groundbreaking ceremony September 9, 2005, Chancellor John V. Lombardi said the new residence halls parallel the recent overall improvements to campus: better quality in the academic programs, expanded faculty resources, and renovations and repairs to the grounds and buildings.
The North Residential Area, which will add 864 beds to on-campus housing, will feature apartment-style living with brick exteriors and floor-to-ceiling windows. The design includes two quadrangles to encourage collegiate competition among the halls. The apartments have four bedrooms, air conditioning, two full baths, and a common living room/kitchen area with pantry, as well as the standard cable and Ethernet connections. With all the amenities, the new halls should compete easily with similar living options offered at other top schools.
The estimated cost of the project is $98.7 million, supported by bonds from the UMass Building Authority. ARC/Architectural Resources Cambridge, Inc., designed the dorms, and Dimeo Construction Co. is building them. The current planned completion date is August 2006 ready for occupancy for the fall semester. |
