| Settled in 1768, the village of Shelburne Falls lies partly in the town of Buckland, partly in the town of Shelburne. One of the most distinctive features of Shelburne Falls is its collection of glacial potholes below the hydroelectric dam. Over 50 such holes make up one of the largest known concentrations of these structures. Ranging in size from six inches to 39 feet across, the smooth, deep pockets were formed during glacial retreat. Stones trapped in cracks in the riverbed were twirled in the fast-moving current, drilling holes into the metamorphic rock. |
