A Volunteer's View

Maura McLaughlin, vice president, UMass Amherst Alumni Club of Greater Boston
FOR ABOUT SIX YEARS, I have been a member of the Steering Committee for the UMass Amherst Alumni Club of Greater Boston and am now the club’s vice president. The purpose of the club is to provide a connection between the university and its alumni by hosting social, professional, educational, and charitable events. During my time with the Alumni Club, I have enjoyed hearing the reminiscences of UMass Amherst alumni from more than five decades. Each story is unique and representative of the dynamic nature of the UMass Amherst experience. I have become friends with many of the alumni that I have met, and it has been a privilege and a great deal of fun to be a part of this group as it strives to increase excitement within the alumni community about our alma mater.

Some of the club’s events are designed to provide an opportunity for business networking, such as the annual Business Luncheon held each spring in Boston, and our upcoming Speed Networking event. Other events bring alumni together in social settings, such as our After Hours gatherings, an ice-skating party at the Boston Common Frog Pond, Boston Celtics and Red Sox games, or the UMass vs. Northeastern men’s hockey game.

We also work to increase the visibility and recognition of the university with prospective students and within the larger community. One of the biggest events run by the club is a series of Welcome to UMass Amherst receptions hosted for incoming freshmen each August. These receptions take place over a series of three nights at different venues around Boston. Alumni Club members, campus representatives, and current students provide information and answer questions from newly enrolled students and their parents.

I encourage all UMass Amherst alumni to become involved with their local alumni club. It is a very rewarding experience on many levels, and will continue to be so as the university further grows and develops. More information is available about regional clubs and volunteer opportunities on the UMass Amherst Alumni Association website, www.UMassAlumni.com or by contacting the office directly at 800-456-UMASS.
