River Keeper
Professor Ed Klekowski
|
ED KLEKOWSKI DIVES INTO HIS work— even if that means diving the depths of the Connecticut River. Klekowski, and his dive team of UMass Amherst students conducted the first underwater investigation of the Connecticut River to document historical, geological, and biological resources of the 400-mile-long waterway.
Klekowski has made his explorations available for viewing in the acclaimed PBS documentaries produced with his wife, Libby Klekowski ’91, and Elizabeth Wilda ’93: Under Quabbin, The Great Flood of 1936 (nominated for an Emmy Award), and Dynamite, Whiskey, and Wood–The Connecticut River Log Drives 1870–1915. “Producing the documentary Under Quabbin changed my career,” says Klekowski. “Using public television allows me to teach as effectively as in the classroom. I’ve gone from an audience of a hundred undergraduates to reaching thousands. People stop me on the street to thank me for my work. It’s been very fulfilling.”
The emeritus professor of biology joined the UMass Amherst faculty as an assistant professor in 1968 and retired last year. He has published more than 80 scientific papers in the area of evolutionary genetics and has been a visiting scholar at the University of Freiburg in Germany, Cambridge University, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in England. “If there is one piece of advice I would offer to UMass Amherst students,” he says, “it is to follow your interests and be passionate about them.” |
