YOU CAN TELL BY THE uniforms that this era of basketball has passed, but Al Skinner ’74, shown during his playing days at UMass, and in his 1972-73 team photo, is still in the game. As men’s basketball coach at Boston College, he was named Big East Coach of the Year as well as National Coach of the Year in 2001. In honor of his exceptional UMass career Skinner’s jersey was retired in February in a ceremony at the Mullins Center. His former coach, Jack Leaman, is shown in the team photo. Leaman attended the jersey retirement, but passed away unexpectedly soon after, on March 6, 2004.
