| The March to Canada, 1704: Once across the river, the captors readied 112 Deerfield men, women and children for a 300-mile march to Canada. The Natives replaced many captives’ shoes with heavy wrap-around winter moccasins to make walking in the snow easier. Still, the captives moved slowly, covering only 20 miles in the first three days. Captors began killing the seriously injured and those who could not keep up the pace. Courtesy of Pocomtuck Valley Memorial Association |
