Message from the President
Supporting the Student Experience

Jess Kane
UMass Amherst Alumni Association President, Jess Kane.
AS I PREPARE TO END my first term as president of the association, I cannot help but reflect on my involvement with the campus. As a student, I was very involved with my fraternity. I washed dishes at the sorority house to earn extra money. I took part in countless campus activities. Most importantly, I met my wife, Andrea Segal ’70, at UMass Amherst. These experiences helped me see the importance of giving back to the campus after I graduated.

This university has been a part of my family for many years. I am a proud alumnus and parent—of both a UMass Amherst graduate and a current graduate student. I was so proud the day my son, Jamie ’00, graduated with his bachelor’s degree in biology and also the day last fall that I helped my daughter, Lauren, move to Amherst to start her graduate degree in educational policy, research and administration.

My family and I owe much of our current personal and professional success to the people we met, the experiences we had, and the education we received at UMass Amherst. Serving as president of this dynamic association is just one way I can help make sure that the opportunities I had on campus are available to current and prospective students. It is my belief that a critical purpose of the association’s mission is to provide the leadership, service and financial support necessary to enrich the academic, cultural and social experiences of the university’s students. I am very proud of the association’s commitment to supporting students.

Your involvement with the alumni association has helped us provide scholarships, leadership opportunities and social and educational activities to enhance the student experience at UMass Amherst. The programs and services we provide for students help attract the most talented students to campus in a very competitive higher education marketplace. Once students are on the campus the association helps to educate them on the importance of being active and engaged alumni—advocates of the university. UMass Amherst’s national as well as global reputation relies on its students’ successes before and after graduation.

As always, if you have questions about the association or if we can be of assistance to you, please contact us (800) 456-UMASS or e-mail us at alumni@admin.umass.edu. We enjoy hearing from you!
