R. PERRY HARRIS, III ’61, founder and president of Sterling Resort Group, was excited to come back to UMass Amherst in March as an Eleanor Bateman Scholar in Residence. During his two-day stay on campus Harris met with students and faculty and guest-lectured in a variety of classes in the Isenberg School of Management.

Harris also gave a public lecture, “Entrepreneurship … One man’s story of success and failure on a profitable business journey.” During his lecture, Harris told students and faculty that one does not have to be a rocket scientist to start a business.

However, he said it is essential to work hard, take risks and learn how to work through problems. “What is most important is to feel like you have put in an honest day of work when you get home at night,” said Harris. He added that his favorite Rolling Stones lyric is “You can’t always get what you want ... but you get what you need.”

Corey Flintoff, an evening newscaster for National Public Radio (NPR), will be the next Eleanor Bateman Scholar in Residence later this spring. Flintoff writes and delivers six hourly newscasts each night as part of NPR’s “All Things Considered” program.

The resident scholars program named after Eleanor Bateman ’23 (founder of the UMass Building Authority), was established in 1989 through an endowment from the Trustees of the University Building Association. It provides students with role models who exemplify the achievement of the university’s mission through public service and professional accomplishments.
