Message from the President

Hal Lane
Alumni Association President Hal Lane
Autumn on the UMass Amherst campus means more than watching the leaves change colors.

For the Class of 2009, fall signifies the start of their four-year journey. Do you remember how you felt on your first day? The excitement and anticipation was evident on these first-year faces as they were welcomed into the UMass Amherst family at various Opening Week activities. For other students, fall is the time to make renewed commitments to study harder and take advantage of activities and opportunities available to them on campus.

As alumni, I encourage you to use this season to reconnect with your alma mater. Come back to campus to cheer on our fall athletes or participate in Homecoming festivities on October 14-16. If returning to Amherst is not possible, join the alumni club in your area. These clubs, led by exceptional alumni volunteers, offer you the opportunity to participate in social, networking, cultural, and educational programs.

Fall is also the time when high school students make decisions about where they want to attend college. Help us recruit prospective students by sharing your UMass Amherst story at college fairs in your area. Also, don’t forget to tell us what is happening in your lives. Send us Class Notes with your address changes, career achievements, and family updates. Most important, join the Alumni Association.

This fall, I have something in common with the first-year students—my face reflects excitement and anticipation as I begin my first term as president of your Alumni Association. I am committed to cooperatively working with the staff, the Alumni Board, and the university to enhance our organization and what it offers to you, our alumni. One of our major initiatives will be implementing our new three-year strategic plan.

The Alumni Association is working hard on your behalf. In the following pages, you can read the Annual Report from the UMass Amherst Alumni Association. This past year, we achieved several important goals including sponsoring more than 150 alumni events and awarding over 100 student scholarships and awards. Our success reflects the strong partnership we have forged with you, the alumni, the UMass Amherst campus, and our students. I am looking forward to continuing this partnership and taking it even further.

If you have any questions about the Alumni Association or if we can be of assistance to you, please contact us at 800-456-UMASS (8627) or e-mail us at alumni@admin.umass.edu. We enjoy hearing from you!
