A PAINTING BY FORMER UMASS Amherst art instructor, Chuck Close, sold recently at Sotheby’s for a whopping $4,832,000.00. “John (1971-72),” acrylic on gessoed canvas measuring 100” x 90”, is a portrait of the late John Roy, a professor in the UMass Amherst Department of Fine Arts from 1965 until his retirement in 1994. John was the last of Close’s 11-piece portrait heads series, which he began in 1967 with the black and white “Big Self Portrait.” Close received an honorary doctorate degree from UMass Amherst in 1995. He lives and paints in New York City.
