GOING TO THE SHOW? UMass sophomore catcher Frank Curreri faced a difficult decision this summer. After being drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks (41st round, 1,226 overall pick), the Weymouth native decided to return to Amherst for his junior season. Curreri, who was a second-team All-Atlantic 10 and All-New England this past spring, has a .363 career average and 10 home runs and 81 RBIs in two seasons as a Minuteman. He spent the summer playing for the Orleans Cardinals in the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League.
THEY’LL BE BACK: If not for the wealth of talent returning, the UMass softball team’s tough finish would have been more disappointing. The Minutewomen, fell in the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time in 10 years and went 1-2 in NCAA Tournament play in Georgia. But the Minutewomen who had a regular season record of 34-17, lose only two starters and will return with their entire pitching staff as well as Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Hilary Puglia. “I think we learned a lot from this season,” Said UMass coach Elaine Sortino. “I think these kids have a lot of good days ahead of them.”
HALLS O’ FAME: Former University of Massachusetts lacrosse goalie Sal LoCascio ’89 will be inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in Baltimore in November. LoCascio holds the all-time NCAA record for career saves with 931. After a stellar career at UMass, he played for the winning U.S. teams in the 1990, 1994 and 1998 International Lacrosse Federation World Championships, and was named outstanding goalie at the 1994 championship. Basketball stars Marcus Camby ’96C and Al Skinner ’74 have been selected for induction to the New England Basketball Hall of Fame this month. With the addition of Camby and Skinner, a total of six former UMass players and coaches have been selected to the Hall of Fame. Softball head coach Elaine Sortino will be inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in December. In her 24 years at the helm of the Minutewoman softball program, Sortino has posted a career record of 824-355-3 (.698). Her 824 victories rank 10th among all active Division I coaches. With an 11-2 win over La Salle on March 28, 2003, Sortino became the 16th coach in NCAA history (13th in Division I) to reach the 800-win plateau. Sortino has led UMass to 16 Atlantic 10 Conference titles, 13 NCAA regional appearances, and three trips to the NCAA College World Series.
