Women in black
EVERY FRIDAY THE WOMEN IN BLACK gather in downtown Amherst. They do not shout or accost passersby; instead they politely ask people waiting at the streetlight if they’d like this week’s flyer, most often a photocopy of a recent editorial or cartoon. They are part of a worldwide organization of women—150 groups, from Australia to Mexico—who oppose injustice, war, and violence. The core group in Amherst is made up of over a dozen local professors, authors, and editors (among them a few UMass Amherst alumni) who make time each week to spread their message to the community.
