Our
hero: Geosciences professor LYNN MARGULIS received
the National Medal of Science from President Clinton in a White House
ceremony March 14. In addition to lifetime achievements in biology, Margulis
was lauded “for extraordinary abilities as a teacher and communicator
of science to the public.” An original essay by the biologist and
frequent co-author DORION SAGAN ’81 appeared in UMass [“Second
Nature: Welcome to the Machine,” Fall 1999].
Classic Bulger: A regular
visitor to Amherst, 
PRESIDENT
WILLIAM BULGER is nowhere more at home than at events relating to his
beloved classics [“Latin Rocks,” Summer 1999]. In February he
lectured on “Freedom and Education in the Classical World,”
at the Campus Center. In December, at the University Club, he presented
the 1999 William H. Bulger Classics awards to Thao Tran ’01, shown
here, and John Oksanich ’00.
Top of HIS class: BOB GOODHUE 
’70,
hanging with undergrads [“Bob’s Excellent
Adventure,” Winter 1998] during his tenure as president of the UMass
Alumni Association, is now university president William Bulger’s
special assistant for alumni affairs. “I look forward to working
to make 300,000 alumni system-wide feel prouder than ever to display their
diplomas,” Goodhue says.
