Openai in talks to pay round three billion US {dollars} for the acquisition of startup Windsurf

Openai is in conversations to pay around 3 billion US dollars for the acquisition of windsurf, a tool for artificial intelligence for coding aid, CNBC has confirmed.

Windsurf, formerly known as Codeeum, competed with cursor, another popular AI coding tool and available MicrosoftAnthropic and open yourself.

Bloomberg first reported on the potential business that CNBC confirmed with a person who was familiar with the matter who asked to remain anonymous because the conversations have not yet been completed.

If a deal with windsurf is taking place, it would be the largest acquisition of Openaai. The company has completed several smaller offers in the past, including the purchase in June from Analytics Database Provider Rockset and Video Collaboration Platform Multi. In 2023, Openai bought global lighting that “used to create creative tools, infrastructure and digital experiences,” said a blog post when the deal was announced. The terms have not been announced for any of these transactions.

Windsurf is one of the tools, in addition to cursor and repuit, to which the developer has been pouring into the “Vibe code” in recent months, a term that relates to the fact that AI models quickly put together code for new software. Andrej Karpathy, a former Openai co-founder, shaped the term in a post on X in February. At the beginning of this month, Microsoft, whose Visual Studio code -Text Editor is often used in the programmers, announced an agent mode function with similar functions.

The start -up investors include the start -up fund, General Catalyst, Greenoaks and Little Perkins. Techcrunch reported in February that Windsurf increased a financing round with an assessment of 2.85 billion US dollars.
