Leading Polymer Research - Dr. Tisato Kajiyama '69G
Dr. Tisato Kajiyama is the president of Kyushu University, one of the former seven imperial universities in Japan. He also serves as vice president of the Japan Association of National Universities.
Kajiyama is one of the most respected polymer scientists in the world. He is generally regarded as the person who initiated and developed the polymer surface and interfacial phenomena: His research has been in the areas of Surface Structure, Fatigue Analysis of Polymeric Solids, Molecular Design of Monolayers and LB Films, Blood Compatibility of Biomedical Polymers, and Molecular Aggregation. Dr. Kajiyama’s scientific accomplishments include authoring more than 770 scientific papers and contributing to more than 150 other publications. Since graduating from UMass Amherst with a PhD, he has received a multitude of Japanese and international awards for scientific accomplishment, service, and outreach. He is responsible for securing strong relationships between UMass Amherst and Japanese polymer and physics societies.
His extraordinary body of work has greatly influenced the Polymer Science and Engineering Department at UMass Amherst and has generated support and funding for research and development at the university and within the field. “Professor Kajiyama left this campus well before I arrived,” says professor George Langford, dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. “However, he makes it a point to interact with various faculty members, new and old. Professor Kajiyama is largely responsible for relationships that have provided tremendous support for the Polymer Science and Engineering Department in terms of international reputation and financial support for research that is at the cutting edge of nanotechnology and biomass-based polymers.”
